Food as Hierophany is an independent line of research that explores food as a place where meaning, symbolism and transformation can emerge.
Rather than approaching food only as nutrition, culture or spectacle, this research looks at certain food experiences as moments of revelation: everyday situations in which food becomes charged with symbolic depth and existential significance.
The term “hierophany” refers to the manifestation of meaning through ordinary reality. In this context, food is understood as a medium through which orientation, memory and inner change can take shape.
This research builds on symbolic and myth-critical approaches to culture, including the concept of hierophany articulated by Mircea Eliade.
An independent research approach
Food as Hierophany is developed outside institutional academia, while remaining in dialogue with it.
The research grows through long-term observation, symbolic analysis, comparative cultural study and creative practice. It draws from myth criticism, food studies and the study of symbolic systems, without being confined to academic formats or disciplinary boundaries.
This position allows the research to remain flexible, embodied and connected to lived experience, while maintaining conceptual rigour.

What this research looks at
Food as Hierophany focuses on concrete cases rather than abstract theory.
These include, among others:
– Ritual and seasonal foods connected to cycles of death and renewal
– Comfort foods as symbolic responses to loss, nostalgia and belonging
– Sacred foods and their contemporary reinterpretations
– Narratives in which food structures moments of passage or transformation
Across cultures and time periods, similar patterns appear: food as mediator, food as memory, food as threshold.
From observation to meaning
The purpose of this research is not classification for its own sake.
Food as Hierophany asks how and why certain food experiences resonate so deeply, and what they reveal about the human need for meaning, orientation and connection.
Food becomes interesting here not because of what it is, but because of what it allows to happen.

A living line of research
Food as Hierophany is an evolving research line. It continues to expand through writing, lectures, collaborations and applied projects.
Its findings are not meant to remain abstract, but to inform creative, pedagogical and symbolic practices.
